Dallas Sand Mine, Gansbay Environmental Audit Report and Update of the Financial Provisions for Rehabilitation
Project Background
Sipho Sea Products (“SSP”) was granted a mining permit on 13 May 2016 which has subsequently been renewed twice, with a third and final renewal application having been
submitted to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (“DMRE”) on 21 April 2020. Upon review of the renewal submission, the DMRE issued SSP with a Notice of Intention
to issue a Compliance Notice in terms of Section 31 of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (“NEMA”).
SSP then approached Braaf Environmental Practitioners SA (Pty) Ltd (“BraafSA”) to update the Financial Provision review as required in terms of Section 24P (3) of NEMA including an Environmental Audit Report (“EAR”) as required in terms of Section 24O of NEMA. This Environmental Audit Report (EAR) and Financial Provisions Update addresses the period that has lapsed for the last year of mining. The period applicable to this assessment is from 20 June 2019 to 20 June 2020.
In terms of Regulation 34(6) of the EIA Regulations, 2014 (as amended), registered interested and affected parties (I&APs) must be notified of the submission of the report, and make such report immediately available—
(a) to anyone on request; and
(b) on a publicly accessible website, where the holder has such a website.
In line with the aforementioned regulation the EAR has been published on the BraafSA website.
